Understanding CIS/UTR: The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is a tax deduction scheme applied to construction work in the UK.
Under CIS, contractors deduct money from a subcontractor s payments and pass it directly to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
These deductions count as advance payments towards the subcontractor s tax and National Insurance.
A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number unique to each individual or organisation registered for Self Assessment or Corporation Tax.
