The Role:
Reporting to the Crane Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of cranes and ancillary plant equipment, ensuring compliance with OEM standards, legislative requirements, and all company policies and regulations. As the Crane Mechanical Superintendent, you will also take the lead in providing support for cranes and associated equipment across designated sites. Additionally, you will manage the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) performance within the department.
You will respond to asset breakdowns, identify root causes of faults and defects, and work to minimize downtime. Regular communication with stakeholders will be essential to provide maintenance progress updates and ensure accurate documentation of departmental tasks.
Key Responsibilities: Ensure all activities are conducted in line with RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) and the company's Health & Safety policies, including active participation in risk assessments and reviews. Support management with daily oversight of the department's operations. Ensure efficient use of asset management systems. Proactively monitor team performance, identify training needs, assess labour levels, and address any areas of underperformance. Participate in long-term preventative maintenance programs and projects. Coordinate engineering team activities, providing clear direction to maximize employee contributions and ensure the delivery of the maintenance plan. Collaborate with the Crane Manager and Operations Management to prioritize both reactive and planned maintenance, ensuring service and repair levels are maintained. Conduct regular communication events with the engineering team, both in group settings and one-on-one, as necessary. Ensure that the Planned Maintenance (PM) schedule is adhered to and any issues are communicated and resolved in a timely manner. Work with suppliers to ensure cost-effective procurement of quality equipment and components. Manage contractor activities, issuing work permits and ensuring that third parties comply with safety procedures and company policies. Foster positive relationships with customers and employees, promoting a culture of Continuous Improvement and engineering excellence. Ensure all statutory inspections are completed in line with current legislation and company procedures. Oversee the efficient and effective operation of the workshop, ensuring excellent housekeeping standards are maintained. Technical Support: Provide technical guidance to teams to resolve complex faults. Collaborate with operational teams to address operational challenges with innovative engineering solutions. Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with regular computer use, but may occasionally require presence in operational areas and on port assets. The role may involve physical tasks such as climbing, lifting, bending, and carrying. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: Strong technical knowledge of plant machinery and equipment. HNC in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical qualification. IOSH certification (or equivalent). Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and effectively supervise others. A proactive approach with strong organizational, planning, and stakeholder management skills.
