The Eating Disorder Service in Suffolk operates from two bases, with some resources shared across the region.
This Consultant post in the East will offer consultation and cover to the teams in West Suffolk as needed.
The service receives referrals from GPs and other agencies.
Assessments are carried out by Mental Health Practitioners (MHPs), with Consultant involvement for specific clinical reasons.
Cases are coordinated by MHPs with input from the Consultant as required.
The Consultant is not expected to carry a caseload but to provide specialist medical support to the team.
The post holder will be appointed as a senior professional to provide advanced professional expertise and clinical leadership.
The post holder is expected to conduct themselves in a manner that helps the Trust deliver its strategic and business objectives and to act as an ambassador with external partners and stakeholders.
The post holder must not bring the Trust into disrepute.
Additionally, the post holder must comply fully with the Nolan Principles and the Standards of Business Conduct.
As a clinical leader, the post holder is expected to demonstrate leadership qualities as set out in the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges).

Appraisals and revalidation completed by the Trust.
Responsibilities: - Psychiatric assessment of patients to establish Eating Disorder and relevant Psychiatric Psychopathology.
- Lead medical assessments of patients with Eating Disorders, ordering necessary investigations and liaising with Medical, Paediatric, GP, and A&E colleagues to manage physical complications.
- Offer Psychiatric and Medical Risk assessment and Management to Eating Disorder Patients.
- Liaise with Children's services, Social services, Education Authorities, GPs, Medical and Psychiatric Colleagues in CMHTs, and families to provide comprehensive care.
- Help implement National (NICE ED Guideline, MEED), Local guidelines, and Pathways.
- Work with team colleagues to help Eating Disorder teams achieve NHS England and Department of Health directives.
- Assist in compliance with Routine Outcome Measures (ROMS) and effective use of ED specific tools for screening and monitoring patient progress.
- Provide therapeutic input in modalities such as CBT-E, Family Therapy, and DBT.
- Supervise ED team colleagues in complex case management.
- Manage and monitor progress of Psychiatric comorbidities among ED patients.
- Provide Psychopharmacological management as indicated in NICE guidelines.
- Knowledge and use of Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Children's Act, and other legal frameworks in management of ED patients.
- Write reports for legal frameworks and support access to social care, work, training, education, and benefits.
- Involve service users and their carers in treatment decisions.
- Work flexibly with other Consultant Psychiatrists to cover annual leave and short sickness absence.
- Participate in out of hours service providing telephone advice to the multi-disciplinary team assessing young people in crisis, subject to a rota.
