Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced senior nurse to join our innovative team.
In this role, you will provide strategic clinical leadership for nursing care, working alongside other professionals in developing comprehensive care pathways for individuals with complex mental health needs who are inpatients at Mill View hospital.
As a Consultant Nurse, you will have a substantial background in working with individuals who experience significant emotional dysregulation, co-occurring mental health conditions, and trauma histories.
You will advocate for parity of esteem for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, ensuring that emotional and psychological needs are met with compassion, evidence-based care, and the integration of bio-psycho-social approaches.
Your expertise will guide the development of clinical protocols and strategies that ensure high-quality, holistic care is delivered, with an emphasis on proactive, patient-centred interventions at Mill View to enable safe discharge and treatment in the community as per NICE guidelines.
In this leadership role, you will guide the inpatient nursing team to address complex emotional needs, facilitating change through clinical governance, staff development, and the promotion of a trauma-informed care framework.

To find out more about what we offer please take a look at our careers portal: Job description Job responsibilities Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership: Provide active and engaged senior nurse leadership across the inpatient's services for individuals with complex emotional needs, ensuring that care is aligned with NICE guidelines and Structured Clinical Management principles.
Work closely with the Divisional Director of Nursing and Quality, the Clinical director and other professionals to develop and implement strategic care plans for clients facing severe emotional distress, including those with co-occurring mental health disorders who are at high risk of self-harm.
Lead efforts to develop nursing protocols, ensuring they integrate trauma-informed care, emotional regulation strategies, and risk management frameworks including community services to provide continuity of care for this patient group reducing the need for admission to inpatient services.
Expert Clinical Risk Management: Ensure that clinical protocols are in place for managing complex emotional and psychological risks, including acute emotional distress, self-harm, and suicidality.
Oversee the clinical risk monitoring system and ensure staff are following evidence-based practices for early identification and intervention.
Actively role model in practice risk management and stratification using therapeutic interventions to reduce risk.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Lead collaborative initiatives across service boundaries with relevant partners, such as mental health liaison teams (MHLT), Neighbourhood mental health teams (NMHTs), crisis resolution and home treatment teams (CRHTTs), and acute care providers.
Facilitate effective communication between inpatient, outpatient, and primary care providers and the third sector ensuring seamless transitions and continuity of care for patients with complex emotional needs, reducing length of inpatient stays which often cause harm to patients with complex emotional needs.
Clinical Supervision and Mentorship: Provide clinical supervision to nursing staff, ensuring they receive expert guidance on the management of complex emotional and psychological needs.
Offer mentorship to colleagues and foster professional development through advanced training in emotional regulation, trauma-informed practices, and psychosocial interventions.
Develop and deliver specialised training on managing complex emotional needs, especially for staff working with patients at risk of emotional dysregulation, interpersonal conflict, or crisis situations.
Advanced Clinical Practice and Consultation: Hold a clinical caseload of individuals with complex needs, employing advanced clinical decision-making skills to assess and deliver interventions.
Provide expert consultancy and support to teams facing highly complex emotional cases, such as individuals with complex personality disorders, trauma, and emotional dysregulation.
Offer support in acute care settings to facilitate early discharge and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, ensuring patients receive appropriate psychosocial interventions during transitions.
Research, Audit, and Service Evaluation: Lead on research initiatives aimed at improving service delivery for those with complex emotional and psychological needs.
Work alongside the professional lead nurse for Brighton and Hove to produce audit and evaluation to monitor outcomes, ensuring that services adhere to the highest clinical standards.
Advocate for the implementation of evidence-based practices based on the latest NICE guidelines and relevant research in managing complex emotional needs.
Leadership in Service Development: Contribute to the future planning and strategic direction of the service, promoting the integration of person-centred, emotionally-focused care across all service levels.
Champion the development of new care pathways to meet the evolving needs of individuals with emotional dysregulation, personality disorders, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Person Specification Qualifications Essential Registered Nurse with current registration (mental health / LD/ Adult) appropriate to the job role Evidence of masters level education in related subject Evidence of significant relevant professional development Training in nurse prescribing Desirable Studying to Doctorate level Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent Knowledge/Experience Essential Extensive clinical experience and practice in the care group in a range of settings.
Expert knowledge of nursing practice and multidisciplinary team working Advanced decision making skills that reflect a patient/carer focus Evidence of publication experience Evidence of ability to drive change forwards through excellent leadership and the ability to create strategic vision.
Communication/Relationship skills: Essential Initiates and leads changes within the service, provides expert advice.
Communicates with a variety of senior staff both internal and external to the Trust on a wide variety of complex issues relating to the care and well being of clients and their families in the care group Advanced communication skills and evidence of change management skills.
Implementation of care packages relating to the care group Analytical & Judgement skills: Essential Ability to analyse, synthesise and present knowledge and information, including complex issues and concepts to a range of audiences and stakeholders.
Deals with complex/highly complex facts or situations, requiring analysis, interpretation, comparison of a range of options Leads and provides expert guidance to colleagues, sets standards for good nursing practice.
