The post consists of 11 programmed activities (PAs) , but part time and job share applicants are welcome to apply. This is a career enhancing opportunity to work in a large district general hospital covering the full range of acute services. The team consists of 4 Consultants who provide a comprehensive Microbiology service. The department provides a comprehensive range of services for our resident population of approximately 500,000 residing mainly in East and North Hertfordshire and extends to the borders of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, West Hertfordshire, and Essex. Stevenage has great transport links and is only 20 minutes from London by train and is east of junctions 7 and 8 of the A1(M). The town thrives with shops, cafes, supermarkets, and restaurants.The Trust has recently launched an exciting 12-month induction programme, which involves a monthly education session for new consultant topics include: 'Being a new consultant - things I wish I'd known' and 'Finance and contracts'.
Main duties of the job Maintenance of high quality patient centred care Shared responsibility for the day to day management of the service and participation in strategic planning Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity Active participation in continuing medical education. Person Specification Qualifications/Training Essential Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT (CCT or equivalence in Medical Microbiology or Virology) FRCPath or equivalent Evidence of being up to date and fit to practice safely, and aware of own training needs Desirable Postgraduate degree Previous Experience Essential Broad range of experience in microbiology including the laboratory diagnosis of infections and their treatment Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues Experience in organising educational activities Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives Demonstrable experience and participation in research Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals Desirable An interest and experience in infection control Demonstrable experience in a locum role Skills Essential Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making Ability to effectively teach clinical skills Ability to critically appraise published evidence Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation Knowledge Essential Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives Other Requirements Essential Demonstrates an interest and commitment to the specialty Experience and evidence of engagement around the equality, diversity, and inclusion agenda.
