We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we areincreasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years.There will also be a marked increase in junior medical and other clinical staffto support this development.
We are an enthusiastic and motivated unit providing ampleopportunities to develop and reshape the delivery of both diabetes andendocrine services in County Durham and Darlington.
We are looking for newcolleagues who will be able to work with us to achieve this goal.We see this as a great opportunity for those who havetraditionally worked within the hospital and those moving into their firstconsultant post, to consider ingeniousways of delivering care closer to home while being an established secondarycare clinician.
Main duties of the job The basic contract is for 10 programmed activites (PAs) withelective outpatient work and inpatient care in both diabetes and endocrineservices.
These duties will be shared with the 5 (1 part time) otherconsultants based in UHND making it a 1:5 flexible commitment and 4 otherconsultants based in DMH making a 1:5 commitment.
The successful candidates will provide skills in diabetesand endocrinology but will be encouraged to develop additional specialexpertise of their choosing (for example diabetic foot, bone metabolism, type 1diabetes, lipid services or erectile dysfunction services) to complement thespecial interests of the other consultants within the Trust.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.We particularly welcome applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates as BAME and disabled people are currently under-representedFrom April 1 2024 we are unable to offer sponsorship for healthcare roles that do not meet the minimum salary, If you are in the UK on a VISA please ensure you have no restrictions that would prevent you from taking this post.Full Job Descriptions can be found in the adverts supporting documents Job description Job responsibilities The post-holders will be expected to undertake clinical workin conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff inorder to maintain and develop the diabetes, endocrinology and metabolicservice.The following are subject to change as the Trust seeks newways of working.The post-holders will be based at theUniversity Hospital North Durham or Darlington Memorial Hospital, withcommitment to out-patient services in associated hospitals within the Trust.The post-holderswill undertake clinicalwork in conjunctionwith their colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintainand develop diabetes and endocrinology services and develop specialist skillsin accordance with the needs of the department.
They will be responsible inconjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of these services.The postholders will work with colleagues to develop services in the communityincluding a contribution to the development and co-ordination of GPs with aspecial interest and the role of the Diabetes Specialist Nurses in theCommunity.The postholders will share responsibility with the other Diabetologists in the trust tomaintain and develop specialist services as well as working with the localimplementation teams.
This will also include a level of clinical supervisionfor GPs with a special interest and community Diabetes Specialist nurses, apoint of contact, advice and referral.The postholders will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in theircharge and will provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultantcolleagues in other clinical disciplines in the hospital and to generalpractitioners in County Durham.The postholders will participate in the current 1:12 on call rota with unselected takealong with the other consultants covering both week days and weekends asrequired.
Consultants will cover colleagues in their absence and ensurecontinuous patient care.Formanagement purposes and use of resources they will be accountable to theClinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resourcesallocated.The postholders will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision ofjunior staff.The postholders will participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff andundergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staffin hospital and community.Researchactivities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinicalduties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be availablefollowing successful applications to the local research and developmentcommittee.ContinuingProfessional Development (CPD) - the post holders is responsible for ensuringthat they meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal andexternal.
They will be expected toattend regularly, and contribute to, the educational programmed activity heldby the Directorate.It isexpected that the appointee will actively and regularly participate in allclinical audit.The postholders will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements inline with national andlocal guidelines andin respect of undergraduate andpostgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current bestpractice.The postholders will be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases ofannual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is practicable.The post holders will uphold the visionsof the Trust and work with the team to help deliver 7 day services for acutemedicine and diabetes services which we are working towards.
Person Specification Statutory Registration Essential Full and specialist registration with GMC (and licence to Practice).
Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at time of interview.

Training in sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing Consultants Experience Essential Experience in Diabetes and Endocrinology and G(I)M. Must be profecient in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Ability to delegate appropriately to trainee/non-consultant Demonstrates ability to work effectively on strategic or long-term issues with colleagues within the NHS and with staff from other agencies Demonstrates ability to lead team and to operate as effective team member Demonstrates successful discharge of managerial responsibilities (if previous consultant experience) Demonstrates skills in planning, management and organisation.
