Whittington Health NHS Trust and University College Hospital wish to recruit a substantive consultant in critical care medicine, who will work in both critical care units.
The post at the Whittington has become available due to retirement.
The job will have a 60:40 split with UCH ITU, and the aim is to continue improving the good working relationship we already have.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice.
Applicants must have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within six months of the interview date), CESR or European Community Rights.
Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues.

The unit at Whittington Health is well staffed medically with a full complement of junior trainees from emergency medicine, anaesthesia and IMT, 2 foundation year doctors, and at present a middle grade rota with 2 posts from the critical care training program and 1 from acute medicine.
We also have 3 non-training middle grade posts, plus a simulation fellow and a research fellow.
Main duties of the jobThis is an 8-week rolling rota for critical care.
In non-ITU weeks, non-clinical work should also be scheduled into the non-ITU weeks, including M and M, clinical governance meetings, datix meetings, etc.
The consultant is off-site at night for critical care on calls.
The 4.5 PAs for ITU work includes payment for starting work at 0800 on the day of being on call and being on-site for 12 hours.
The 4.5 PAs also include payment for unpredictable emergency work such as phone discussions and return to site when required and is also subject to an on-call availability supplement in category A (5%).
Clinical PAs at the Whittington Hospital 4.5 PA ICU day and night shifts including weekend on call 1/8.
46 X 24-hour shifts per year covering ITU with prospective cover.
4 x 4hr coroners work, 12 x M and M meetings per year at 2 hrs each.

SPAs 1.5 SPA 1.5 SPAs for critical care for meeting revalidation requirements including CPD e.g.
for intensive care includes monthly meeting, M and M, teaching, CPD, Audit/QI, and either anaesthetics or acute medicine- reflecting specialist expertise in this second specialty.
Planned as QIP lead and SIM and transfer lead.
The ICU rota runs on a block arrangement of continuous cover on an 8-week cycle with internal cover for annual leave, as outlined in the above table.
There will be four weekdays and 1 in 8 weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) of ICU duty consultant cover.
For annual leave and study leave, organising cross cover is required.
This rota commitment is currently reckoned at 4.5 DCC PAs.
When on clinical duty, the post holder will have the following responsibilities:
Overseeing and coordinating care of the patients in the ICU including guidance and supervision of the resident junior doctors.Communication and liaison with other teams and professional groups involved in the care of the patients to optimise progress and rehabilitation aims (Including MDT reviews).Gate-keeping role: overseeing appropriateness of referrals for admission and suitability for discharge.
All potential admissions are discussed with the Attending duty consultant.The clinical role of this post has scope for development and accommodation of a specific relevant clinical interest.

Person SpecificationClinical Experience & SkillsCritical care experience commensurate with CCT in Intensive Care Medicine.Able to work without supervision and make appropriate clinical decisions.Willingness to accept responsibility of team leadership and experience of working within multidisciplinary teams.Ability and willingness to take full responsibility for clinical care of patients of any acuity.Evidence of continuing professional development, remaining up-to-date on national guidelines relevant to the critical care.Ability to perform clinical procedures essential to critical care, including advanced airway management.Experience in multiple modes of cardiac output monitoring.Experience in preoperative medicine and management of complex high-risk patients.Accreditation in critical care ultrasound eg echocardiography, lung and patient simulation, FUSIC mentorship.Ability to supervise, educate and train junior doctors.Experience of haematology/oncology critical care.Professional QualificationsEligible for full UK GMC Registration.On GMC Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine Register, or at the time of interview within 6 months of expected date of CCT.Provider status in ALS, ATLS (or equivalent) and in APLS (or equivalent).Instructor status in one or more life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, PALS).FRCA (or equivalent training/exam).MRCP or equivalent.MCEM or equivalent.Quality Improvement & ManagementExperience of undertaking audit and quality improvement projects and willingness to develop the local programme.Research & Teaching ExperienceHigh level of commitment to teaching with a track record of teaching at all levels.Familiarity with research methodology and record of publications.Ability to participate in translational research consistent with the UCLH 'themes'.Teaching course.Peer-reviewed publications.Appropriate Higher Degree MD, PhD or equivalent.Teaching qualification.Disclosure and Barring Service CheckThis post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
