Job summary This post is an important part of our ongoing development of medical services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, offering the successful applicant the opportunity to work closely with the existing oncologists to provide a high standard of care across the Trust.
We are seeking consultants with enthusiasm, commitment and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.
This is a substantive appointment, based at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood and the Lister Hospital.
The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) and an on-call commitment.
At Mount Vernon, the post holder will be expected to work with members of the CNS and urology SMDT to plan and supervise the oncology treatment of patients.
At the Lister Hospital site the post holder will work closely with the urology multidisciplinary teams to provide a safe and high-quality outpatient oncology service.
Main duties of the job We currently provide adult primary CNS tumour treatment for a large population covering Hertfordshire, Luton, South Bedfordshire and Northwest London.
We work very closely with the Neurosurgical team at National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square and Addenbrooke's and join the MDT meetings with both centres.
The post holder will join an active unit which currently constitute 1 clinical Oncologist and 1 Medical Oncologist supported by the CNS.
With increased workforce, and the proposed change in governance, there is the exciting opportunity of expanding the service and more collaborative work with these units.
We are research active and run multiple clinical trials including investigator led and trust sponsored research.
The clinical oncology post holder would be encouraged to develop innovative clinical research activity in urology & CNS malignancies.
Research opportunities are excellent and Mount Vernon is active in national and international trials.
There is excellent peer support led by each tumour lead.
The Trust has a comprehensive programme of leadership mentoring available for newly qualified Consultants.
Opportunities are also available to other Consultant appointees to play an active part in the programme.

Job description Job responsibilities Maintenance of high-quality patient centered care Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity Delivery and development of Radiotherapy & SACT administration Active participation in continuing medical education Active participation in trial research activities Person Specification Qualifications / Training Essential Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register College Membership RCR Desirable College Fellowship Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) Previous Experience Essential Broad range of experience in Clinical Oncology in particular specialist interests in Urology & CNS cancers Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice Desirable Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives Demonstrable experience and participation in research Skills Essential Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making Ability to effectively teach clinical skills Ability to critically appraise published evidence Knowledge Essential Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives Comprehensive knowledge and insight regarding all the domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
