We are looking for a Consultant in Acute and General Internal Medicine to join our team at Lymington Hospital.
You will be part of an acute medical rota (1 in 9 weekdays and 1 in 10 weekends) and will provide inpatient care to patients admitted during their on-call periods.
You will work as part of a very committed and collaborative consultant medical team.
Make your application after reading the following skill and qualification requirements for this position.
Main duties of the job The Physicians all have acute medical inpatients in Lymington and the trainees share the on-call inpatient work on the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU-16 beds).
Referrals are taken from GPs, the ambulance service, and the Frailty Support Team or sometimes via the nurse-led Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).
One junior doctor is timetabled to support the acute medical intake between 09.00-20.00, with another providing the overnight on-site duties, including review of any medical admissions.
On average, approximately 8 patients are admitted in each 24-hour period who remain the responsibility of the admitting consultant for the duration of their hospital stay.
Patients requiring > 24-hour stay are usually moved from MAU to the medical inpatient beds.
Consultants are organised into two teams with the 10 trainees split between the two, as well as one FY1 allocated to each team.
During periods of consultant leave, inpatient responsibility for patients passes to the other consultants within the appropriate team to ensure continued regular senior review.
On-call duties are swapped with colleagues during periods of leave.
Following the on-call days, there is an expectation of a consultant-led post-take ward round, followed by review of other inpatients under the consultant's care.
There is a second timetabled ward round for review of patients under the consultant's care, and the consultant may be required to review their patients at other times on the wards during their clinical sessions.
