General Description of Position Under the direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of Advising and working in collaboration with the Assistant Athletic Director, the College Advisor/Athletic Coach provides holistic advising to an assigned cohort of students from the point of admission throughout their academic career at Southeast Community College.
This position is also responsible for the recruitment, training, and supervision of the specified athletic sport and monitoring the eligibility of all student-athletes on their assigned campus.
Coaching duties are assigned based on the successful candidate's qualifications and the needs and availability of the College's sanctioned sports teams.

In addition, Southeast Community College makes available to all full-time employees the use of "Ben Dollars" (cash-in-lieu potential for certain coverage levels) to cover medical and dental premiums.Essential FunctionsProactive and developmental onboarding:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will evaluate admission test scores and transcripts, analyze pre-orientation student assessments, recommend interventions when appropriate, and advise students based on their interests, strengths, values, and goals.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will advise students at New Student Enrollment (NSE) and will consistently engage with students from the completion of NSE through the first term to provide messaging, connection, and support.
Career advising:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will assist students in clarifying and confirming academic paths and career choices.
This may involve interpreting career assessments and discussing results with students to develop academic, career, and personal plans consistent with their interests, values, and strengths.Academic advising:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach is responsible for providing first-term academic advising for students within their assigned academic cohort.
This may involve explaining general education and degree requirements and evaluating transfer credit.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will provide accurate information and guidance to students as they make decisions about traditional classroom and distance learning options, selection of a program of study, and SCC policies and procedures and will assist students in developing an academic plan that integrates with their current responsibilities and life goals.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will refer students to appropriate support services such as Admissions, Testing Center, Transitions, Accommodations, and Financial Aid as necessary.Athletic Advising:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will instruct student-athletes in the official eligibility requirements of the NJCAA and provide ongoing eligibility monitoring for all campus athletes to ensure NJCAA compliance.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach is responsible for understanding and communicating eligibility requirements and rules to fellow members of the College Advising team.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will assist all campus athletes in developing educational plans in collaboration with their assigned college/faculty advisor.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will serve as a campus resource for working with student-athletes and provide training to student affairs and instructional personnel on best practices for working with this population.Ongoing success coaching:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will serve as a continuous resource to students within their assigned academic cohort.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will assist students with academic, career, and interpersonal skill development to heighten their academic success and will support, educate, and advocate for students experiencing challenges within and outside of the classroom.
This may involve referring the student to SCC services and/or community agencies.Program planning and implementation:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will plan, develop, and implement a variety of programs and services that will increase the success and retention of students within their academic cohort and in the student population as a whole.Collaboration:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will interact with faculty and staff within SCC, at other colleges and universities, and with a variety of outside agencies and organizations in collaborative efforts geared towards enhancing student success, retention, and completion.The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will increase awareness of and commitment to holistic advising at SCC among faculty, staff, and students, and will work directly with faculty within their assigned academic cohort to plan and implement joint activities that foster student success.Data management:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will use software and other designated tools to record and manage quantitative and qualitative data on students' progress at SCC.Professional development:The College Advisor/Athletic Coach will participate in professional development opportunities in order to stay up to date on best practices in student development, advising, onboarding, and overall student success and retention.Athletic Coach for Women's BasketballRecruit new athletes to participate in the NJCAA Region IX-defined athletic program.Provide daily coaching to student-athletes.Travel with the team to athletic contests and supervise athletes at all events.
Instruct student-athletes in the official rules of the defined athletic program and the applicable bylaws of the NJCAA.Instructor of record for Intercollegiate Women's Basketball credit courses: plans, develops, and instructs all courses, assesses student progress, and administers a grade at the end of the term.
Follows SCC guidelines and adheres to SCC Instructor Responsibilities.Assist athletes in developing education plans based on career goals, and appraisal of personal characteristics, interests, education, and experience.Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and make appropriate referrals.Participate in fundraising and public relations events by making personal appearances and providing sports camps, clinics, and activities.Provide leadership and planning in the areas of team travel, scouting, and scheduling by working and communicating with the Athletic Director.Comply and follow strict adherence to NJCAA rules and regulations as outlined in the NJCAA handbook.

Commit to fostering and maintaining a safe environment of respect and inclusion for students, employees, and members of the community, and promote and support the College's policies and programming related to access, fair employment, EEO, equity, inclusion, and diversity.Marginal FunctionsParticipates in local, state, and regional associations and other groups concerned with academic advising, career planning, success coaching/retention, or specials needs issues.Provides advising and retention information to faculty, staff, and others as requested.Assists the Administrative Director of Advising with the acquisition of resource materials appropriate for inclusion in the Advising Center.Ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.Perform other related duties within the division/program as assigned.May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required.
Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College.
Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification.
Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of and experience with applying professional advising methods and techniques in a variety of situations.Ability to work and communicate with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public both in writing, in person, and on the phone.Knowledge of and experience in recruiting prospective student-athletes.Knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations.Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to women's basketball and teaching athletes at the college level.Knowledge and ability to collect, arrange, and interpret data in both written and verbal format.Skills and abilities necessary to describe various educational programs and occupations in a factual, clear, and concise manner in both verbal and written formats.Strong computer skills and ability to navigate student data systems.Experience with online research and career and educational assessment instruments.Ability to possess and maintain a current, valid Driver's License and be insurable as a driver by the College's insurance carrier.Ability to lift and carry up to (50) fifty pounds for short distances, and move tables, chairs, and media equipment.The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.Two (2) years of work experience working with students in an educational environment.
*One (1) year of experience coaching women's basketball.
* A Master's degree may substitute for one year of work experience Desired Qualifications Master's degree from accredited college or university.Work experience in higher education setting in areas such as academic or career advising, academic success coaching, retention, or general student affairs.Two (2) or more years' experience coaching women's basketball.Knowledge and ability to collect, analyze and interpret data in both written and verbal form.Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
