St John Ambulance Cymru is the first aid charity for Wales. Established in 1918, our mission is to save lives and enhance the health and wellbeing of Welsh communities.
Supported by nearly 2,600 volunteers, we continue to deliver frontline services in the heart of Welsh communities and provide vital support to our emergency services when they need us most. We provide workplace training in first aid and health and safety and event medical cover at thousands of events. We support NHS Wales with falls response and mental health transfer services, and we run programmes for children and young people from age 5 to 18. We turnover around £8m per annum.
St John Ambulance Cymru are also part of something much bigger, an independent Priory of the Order of St John, working alongside 43 St John establishments across the globe.

Main duties of the jobOur Clinical Director leads our clinical teams of over 2,000 first aiders and Healthcare Professionals providing training in communities and medical care on behalf of the NHS as well as at over 400 events across Wales each year.
This 14 hours per week post is a member of our Executive Leadership Team reporting directly to the CEO. You will be required to attend a weekly Executive meeting at our Cardiff HQ on Monday afternoons. Hybrid working is available outside of this commitment. You will be the lead executive for our Clinical Committee and advise the ELT on clinical matters.
We're looking for someone with experience in Pre-Hospital care and event medicine who will be committed to the highest clinical standards and the power of volunteering. You will have experience leading a large team, ideally involving a volunteer/employee mix. You'll have excellent interpersonal skills, and you will embody our values and behaviours as well as believing in our mission.
Job responsibilitiesOrganisational Overview:
Our mission is Saving Lives in Wales through First Aid. Making sure we provide the best clinical services from First Aid to Immediate Care is key to our Vision of Wales as a Community of Lifesavers. This post is responsible for ensuring high quality care is delivered by everyone trained by or wearing the badge of St John.
Role Overview:
Reporting to the CEO, the Clinical Director is a member of the Executive Leadership Team, providing leadership and ensuring high clinical standards and positive patient outcomes. This postholder is the accountable executive for clinical standards and governance.
The postholder will inform strategy and with the Chief Operating Officer make key decisions as to how our services are led and delivered. The postholder will be the lead executive for the Clinical Committee and ensure that the views of our healthcare professionals (medics/nurses/paramedics/therapists) are represented in our planning and discussions at Executive Leadership Team. This role will professionally line manage the Deputy Chief Clinical Officers, whilst supporting the recruitment, education, development and retention of St John People (including non-registrant roles).
Key duties and responsibilities:
Clinical LeadershipThought leadership for the organisation around the provision of clinical services and oversight across St John including training, professional development and research.Ensuring that clinical policies and procedures are in line with legislation, and are reviewed as required; providing clinical advice and leadership in the implementation of policy and professional standards;Leading the delivery of good clinical governance, including the commitment to regular clinical quality improvement and a process of risk management and adverse event reporting. Ensuring this is embedded across all parts of the organisation.Advising upon academic activity across SJAC, in collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team and key clinical leads, with a medium-term goal of stimulating research in areas relevant to the Charity.Working with the Head of Education, to provide oversight and assurance that the delivery of clinical education and training to First Aiders is based on the latest evidence.Acting as an advocate for high quality evidence-based compassionate care within St John Ambulance Cymru and as an ambassador externally.Working collaboratively with the Chief Operating Officer, Director of People, Culture and Experience and the Chief Commissioner to ensure that our peoples development and experience is sector leading.Provide information and assurance to the Board relating to clinical matters, via the Clinical Committee.Person SpecificationQualificationsEducated to at least first degree level or equivalent.ExperienceExperience in Pre-Hospital care and event medicine.Experience leading a large team, ideally involving a volunteer/employee mix.Excellent interpersonal skills.Competencies and behavioursApproachable, authentic, demonstrating empathy and humility.A clear communicator: succinct, articulate, tactful and authentic in communication.Calm, measured and resilient when dealing with adversity.Passionate about St John Ambulance Cymru and its mission to help vulnerable people and save lives.Self-aware and capable of delivering and receiving constructive, candid feedback.Respectful and upholding of the Christian values of the charity.Disclosure and Barring Service CheckThis post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
