Job summary We are seeking an experienced part-time (3 days per week), Band 8a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Research and Development team based at the Public Health Clinical Microbiology laboratory, Cambridge to participate in a Metagenomics project.
You should have extensive laboratory experience in a Microbiology setting, particularly in molecular/Nanopore sequencing.
You will need to be enthusiastic, well-motivated with good organisational and practical skills supported by scientific knowledge.
We are looking for someone with good interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work as a part of a team.
Main duties of the job Validation and evaluation of Respiratory Metagenomics using next generation sequencing technology Delivery of Clinical Metagenomic Service Analysis and interpretation of Quality Controls/results and communication to the wider team To work flexibly in reflection of service needs Ensure that all data and development activity is consistent with current governance regulations and data protection, legislation and keeping appropriate records.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential Relevant professional qualification: full registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and PhD in microbiology/virology or a related discipline Experience Essential oRelevant Postdoctoral experience in clinical microbiology laboratory oFamiliarity with diverse molecular diagnostic platforms oMolecular assay development and validation oExperience of working in a Category 3 laboratory oExperience of working within the antimicrobial/viral resistance field oEvidence of continuing professional development oExperience of sequencing, including working with Nanopore sequencing technology oAble to troubleshoot library prep workflows for next generation sequencing Desirable oSubstantive (postdoctoral) experience in Public Health microbiology in reference and/or diagnostic settings oDemonstrable experience of running services accredited to ISO 15189 standard Knowledge Essential oAbility to use pathology IT systems, including Quality Management systems oAble to perform risk assessment oAble to perform regular audits as required oUnderstanding of Sequencing technology and applications in microbiology oAbility to understand and interpret quality control relating to next generation sequencing results Desirable oGood working knowledge of antibiotic susceptibility testing and resistance mechanisms.
