RatedOutstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families acrossSurrey, north-west London and south-west London from diagnosis to end of lifeand throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional andmedical care.Our specialist care and support isfree of charge to families and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Itincludes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management and painrelief, overnight respite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement careand a comprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the wholefamily.At the heart of what we do are ourdedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism means everyfamily has the opportunity to make every moment count.It costs £10 million a year to run ShootingStar Childrens Hospices.
Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, sowe rely on our supporters generosity to keep the service running.
We employ175 members of staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, and support around700 families.

This includes completion of theShooting Star care competencies Ensure that care staff use equipment safely and are aware of the uses,safety precautions, handling, cleaning and maintenance of equipment in thehospiceTo be competent in the use of all relevant IT systems ensuring that datais entered in an accurate and timely fashion, in accordance with SSCH policyand procedureParticipate in the on-call rotaMANAGERIAL:Ensurethe provision of appropriate supervision and support to members of the careteamSupportthe provision of effective communication between all SSCH services, all membersof the multidisciplinary team, families and visitorsTakethe lead on specific areas of management responsibility as allocated by thelead nurseEnsurequality care is given, by being familiar with agreed hospice and SSCH standardsof care and to inform seniors if the required standard cannot be reachedManageallocated resources effectively and efficiently.
This includes maintaining the correct skillmix of staff for the childrens dependencies, bed management, utilisation oftime and equipmentAssistin ensuring the safety of the hospice, and the risk management process byactively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues,including the managing and reporting of incidentsToensure that staff know where to access Shooting Star policies and clinicalprocedure guidelines and that staff adhere to these at all timesToensure compliance with the Health and Social Care Act regulations 2010 byensuring that you and staff in your supervision adhere to the Care QualityCommission standards at all timesToensure you and staff in your supervision are aware of The Mental Capacity Act,2005, and Deprivation of Liberty (DOLS) safeguards and to ensure MentalCapacity Assessments and DOLS applications are undertaken appropriately Towork closely with the Lead Nurses in Shooting Star to cross cover and deputisefor them in their absenceActas an ambassador for Shooting Star Childrens HospicesToundertake relevant Shooting Star wide projects in agreement with the Heads ofCareParticipatein events or publications that promote Shooting Star and childrens palliativecareEDUCATIONAL:Toactively assist in the education and practical training of students, juniorstaff and multidisciplinary team members at every opportunity, through formaland informal teachingEnsurethe provision of and access to appropriate mentors for student nurses andprovide a supportive and challenging environment for students in trainingParticipatein the audit of the clinical environmentSuperviseand orientate students, temporary staff and staff new to SSCHToact as a preceptor for junior staff nursesTobe a resource for students and junior colleagues, facilitating the developmentof junior staffInitiateand participate in audit and research studies relating to nursing andmultidisciplinary care, presenting findings through presentations and writingfor publicationMaintainown professional development and mandatory trainingPROFESSIONAL;Tomaintain confidentiality surrounding the child / young person and their familyat all timesToensure that all care is documented and that all relevant documentation iscompleted accurately and within agreed timescales using Shooting Star approveddocumentation in line with NMC, CQC and Shooting Star standardsTodemonstrate a professional approach to work, and act in accordance with the NMCCode of Professional Conduct at all timesToparticipate in staff appraisals, staff development and in service trainingactivitiesTomeet PREP requirements.
