Job Introduction The Digital Audio News team curates and produces content for the Latest News Playlist and News Live Stream which feature prominently on the BBC Sounds homepage.
The playlist includes highlights from BBC News output as well as explainers and topical podcasts that help our audiences understand the top stories of the day.
The team is also responsible for the day-to-day running of the Live News stream – a dedicated audio feed carrying the best of the BBC's rolling news coverage, and live podcast episodes.
Digital Audio News produces the 5 Minutes On, 5 Questions On and Reporter Reads podcasts for BBC Sounds.Working to the Editor of the Radio Newsroom, the Assistant Editor will lead this team and work closely with editorial, curation and product teams in BBC News as well as BBC Sounds and other digital platforms.
The Assistant Editor will need strong leadership skills and flexibility – this team needs to be sensitive to technological and editorial innovation and adaptable, often at short notice.
The Assistant Editor will also be expected to work across all of the output to play a full part in the leadership team of the Radio and Audio Newsroom.Main Responsibilities The Assistant Editor will be someone with a real vision for the future of Digital Audio News, and with strong leadership credentials to lead and manage a team who will constantly need to innovate and change.
They will support the team as it continues to innovate and experiment.
They will be ahead of the latest audio news trends and technology, and have a large degree of flexibility.
Editorially the role requires a deep understanding of the domestic and international news agenda, and a firm grasp of the BBC's editorial values.
A vision for how to deliver a broad, surprising and varied agenda is vital, as well as the depth to deliver analysis, forensic journalism and context to more complex stories.
We are particularly trying to attract hard to reach audiences, so a sense of how to deliver news for those audiences is also a must.
It is important that the Assistant Editor is constantly finding new and interesting ways to tell stories; using all the audio tools at our disposal.
Evidence of creative treatments of stories is required, and the willingness to try new things is a must.
This role involves liaising with a large number of stakeholders so relationship building and the ability to represent the department across News is vital.
As a senior member of staff, the Assistant Editor will also play a key role in managing the whole newsroom and its staff.
They will be an experienced leader and may be called upon to deal with difficult staff situations, manage industrial relations, deliver both positive and negative feedback and manage tight budgets.
They will represent the Digital Audio Newsroom throughout the BBC, especially in relation to the programmes, platforms and networks it serves.
They may be called upon to explain and defend the newsroom's journalism to the public.
The role will work across a full range of shifts seven days a week including early, lates, weekends and bank holidays.
Are you the right candidate?The successful Assistant Editor in Digital Audio News team will need to have a wide-ranging skillset including the below: • Strong editorial judgment and experience in News at a senior level, with the ability to deliver context and analysis as well as the latest news lines• Excellent audio writing, editing and audio production skills• Detailed knowledge of the audiences we serve and experience of interpreting real time audience data to ensure content is created and accessible in the best way for our audiences• A strong understanding of how to deliver to underserved and hard to reach audiences• Proven ability to lead teams producing the news, often under pressure.
A demonstrable ability to deal with and get the best out of correspondents and reporters, and to work with multiple stakeholders across News and beyond• Proven recent ability to help senior leadership with management tasks including industrial relations and delivering difficult feedback• Ability and willingness to work across a range of shifts and to be flexible to meet the needs of a breaking news environment• An enthusiasm for the BBC's journalism, for telling stories in an engaging and nuanced manner in order to retain existing audiences while attracting new audiences; • An ability to lead and encourage the team to deliver objectives and maintain a good working environment in line with BBC values • A commitment to the BBC'S wider priorities and editorial values including diversity, inclusion, transparency and accuracy.
