About the job Job summary The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants.
Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 7,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations.
Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff.
There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army.
The post is in Bovington Camp, home of the Armour Centre (ARMCEN) and is a British Army base located in Dorset which, together with Lulworth Camp, forms the Bovington Garrison.
ARMCEN has been the home of the British Armys tank training since 1916.
The camp is a matter of miles from the south coast and is part of the world heritage site that is The Jurassic Coast.
The Garrison consists of three barrack complexes and two forest/heathland training areas that support the delivery of Initial Trade Training (ITT) for soldiers of the Royal Armoured Corps, the Royal Engineers and the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as well as Subsequent Trade Training (STT) for many other Defence units.
It is also home to the British Armys Trials Unit and the Royal Marine Armour Support Group.
The ARMCEN Support Unit is responsible for enabling the life support functions of the permanent staff, students and military families based at the Garrison.
The Team Leader is responsible for managing the outputs of the team, with a particular responsibility for Welfare, SHEF, Force Health Protection, Security, Physical Development and Garrison Admin.
The Support Unit is essential to the effective daily running of the Garrison without it, the training and Garrison outputs would be impossible to deliver.
The role of Team Leader is dynamic, varied, interesting and rewarding, leading and managing a team of subject matter experts in their fields and ensuring that the Garrison is understood and correctly represented within the wider military and local Government and civilian community.
The post is advertised for 37 hours per week and is open for all working patterns but please note that part-time or job share will only be considered if full time cover can be achieved.
Job description The ASU Team Leader is the principal staff officer working to the Garrison Commander in his role as Garrison Commander and Head of Establishment, providing both strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the Garrison Support Unit.
The role assures and ensures delivery of key Garrison outputs alongside all associated risks & issues, manages relevant Garrison projects, and necessitates close cooperation with all Garrison stakeholders and outside agencies such as Regional Headquarters staffs, Civilian Local Authorities (LA) such as Dorset Council and local Emergency services which will necessitate some after hours working.
Main responsibilities will include - Lead and manage the Garrison Support unit and all the staff within, ensuring the successful routine delivery of the key functional areas of; Welfare, SHEF, Force Health Protection, Security, Physical Development and Garrison Admin in support of CMC HQ, HQ Royal Armoured Corps and all Garrison Units/lodger organisations Act as the focal point responsible to the Garrison Commander for providing strategic direction across these key functional areas; liaising with key stakeholders, acting as the principal point of contact for interpretation and implementation of policy and assuring compliant delivery Infrastructure lead for estate maintenance projects and all future strategic infrastructure development plans in partnership with the Garrison Logistics lead (Quarter Master) Bovington Garrison Senior Fund Manager for non-public funds Garrison lead for all aspects of Force Health protection and ensuring that Garrison units achieve their wider mandated responsibilities e.g.
Major Accident Control Register planning and regular rehearsals at Lulworth Camp Lead Garrison liaison and engagement at senior level with HQ SW/Regional Command and all other relevant internal & external stakeholders e.g.
Reserves Forces and Cadets Associations for all key functional areas.
Further enhance the Lived experience for Garrison personnel Chair relevant committees such as; SHEF, Health, Welfare and others as directed by the Garrison Commander.
Ensure maintenance of mandated levels of relevant unit training e.g.
Casualty Notifying Officer/Casualty Visiting Officer Remotely Piloted Air Systems Garrison Responsible Officer.
Be prepared to support further Garrison Operational tasks as directed by the Garrison Commander Act as the Civil engagement lead on behalf of the Garrison Commander including delivery of all Engage to recruit events and with all local emergency services as required Deputise for Garrison Commander in Head of Establishment capacity as required Person specification The successful candidate will have strong organisational and planning skills to manage the requirements and the team it looks after.
You will need to be a good verbal and written communicator able to speak to experts and clearly articulate this into the written word.
You will have excellent leadership skills.
You will need to lead and collaborate with stakeholders and your team to deliver an output.
You will also be the daily Garrison support function lead, including deputising for the Head of Establishment where required.
You will need to be an experienced manager of teams of individuals who are the subject matter experts (SME's)in their fields.
You will be cohering and directing their outputs on a daily basis and will not be required to be an SME yourself.
This management function comes with a significant reporting requirement.
This post requires reasonable IT skills.
You will need to be proficient using Microsoft Office 365 applications.
A good understanding of the Army and its role and outputs would be highly desirable but is not essential.
