Job summary We aim to recruit a high-quality individual who either wishes to optimize their experience for a future application for a national training number (NTN) or wishes to progress their career in Orthopaedic Surgery having decided not to continue to apply for an NTN.
This post is for 6 months and is due to start in February 2024.
There are 28 Consultants in the department.
The majority have commitments at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH) and Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH).
Elective Lower limb arthroplastysurgery is undertaken at CGH and all Trauma, Spinal and Paediatric work is undertaken at GRH.
TheDirectorate has developed a complete range of special interests including traumatology, spine, hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, hand and paediatric surgery.
In addition, there are also 6 Associate Specialists, 2 Specialty Drs, 8 Trust Registrars, 9 Specialist Registrars, and a team of junior ward medical staff working for the Directorate over both sites Main duties of the job The appointee will be expected to work with the rest of the orthopaedic team to provide orthopaedic and trauma services to the county.
The post will be predominantly based in the main two hospitals with workat other community hospital sites in the county.
The appointee will be expected to work eight clinical sessions per week, which is the same as the Specialist Registrars.
Most of these sessions will be fixed but there will be an annualised component to cover otherclinics and lists.
The appointee will also be expected to take part in the middle grade on call rota at Gloucester Royal Hospital, which is prospectively covered.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential Have at least 24 months' experience in surgery (not including Foundation modules) by time of appointment of which a minimum of 10 months experience is in trauma based Trauma and Orthopaedic Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at time of appointment Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent, in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice; including: Able to provide evidence of satisfactory completion of ATLS at the time of interview Desirable CT/ST1 and CT/ST2 ISCP competences identified within the Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery curriculum and acquired within the previous 24 months At least 8 months experience comprising two related specialties Acute General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Intensive Care Medicine or Emergency Medicin At least 12 months experience in trauma based Trauma and Orthopaedic posts with a major commitment to Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Knowledge Essential Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems Ability to prioritise clinical need Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date Exposure of an aptitude for surgery - good manual dexterity Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice Understanding of basic research principles, methodology and ethics, with a potential to contribute to research Evidence of participation in audit Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others Desirable Shows aptitude for practical skills, hand-eye coordination, dexterity, visuospatial awareness A practical course devoted entirely to orthopaedic casting techniques aimed at orthopaedic trainees Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements Evidence of participation in risk management and/or clinical/laboratory research Demonstrates information technology skills Skills Essential Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice Understanding of basic research principles, methodology and ethics, with a potential to contribute to research Evidence of participation in audit Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others Capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively with others Able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand Desirable Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements
