Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation TrustThe Haematology Day Unit is a nurse-led service offering apheresis, supportive care, and venesection. We care for patients with haematological cancers, sickle cell disease, and other haematology diseases.
Our aim is to provide expert care to allow patients to avoid hospital admissions and to manage their disease in an ambulatory setting.
We are seeking experienced senior nurses to join our team as a Senior Staff Nurse on the Haematology Day Unit. The individuals should be motivated, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate within a challenging and fast-paced environment. You will be supported by a strong expert team, including the Ward Sister, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and the inpatient Matron team.
We are currently open Monday to Friday 08.00 - 20.00. Shift patterns at present are 9.5 hour shifts per week. We do not currently work weekends or bank holidays regularly; however, occasionally work out of hours to support the service, and eventually we may aim for weekends to be permanent in the future.

Main Duties of the JobWe are seeking experienced and motivated nurses to join our team on the Haematology Day Unit. We are looking for nurses eager to develop their clinical skills and competence and want to be future leaders within haematology nursing in an ambulatory setting.
You will have the opportunity to further develop and enhance your skills within a haemato-oncology setting with the support and training necessary. We are seeking candidates with a strong desire to deliver the best individualized care to patients living with haematological diseases by working as an effective part of the nursing and wider team.
The successful candidate will need to have at least 1 year of experience in haematology and an acute setting and will be committed to developing their skills, knowledge, and leadership in a fast-paced setting.
Opportunities for the right candidate include developing skills in apheresis, expert cannulation assisted by ultrasound, femoral line placement, and bone marrow biopsy skills. Informal visits/phone calls are strongly recommended.
Job ResponsibilitiesIndependently manage a group of patients within the specialty while working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualized and personalized direct patient care.Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination, and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood and blood products.Assess and recognize emergencies in the specialty, interpret information, take appropriate action, and lead others to do the same.Act as an advocate for patients within the department, ensuring a patient-oriented approach to the delivery of care and meeting standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.Ensure that patients receive high-quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs, and doctrines.Person SpecificationProfessional/Statutory RegistrationRN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of specialty.Qualifications/EducationBSC/degree Nursing or equivalent qualification/training and experience.Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in the area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training, and CPD.Mentorship/Teaching Qualification.Minimum 1 year Post-registration qualification in haematology.Ability to demonstrate leadership skills and staff management.Sign off Mentorship.Previous post-registration experience within haematology.Experienced and competent in the management of patients within the specialty.Experience of teaching/assessing/supervising others in a clinical setting.Substantial experience in a clinical setting as a band 5 or 6.Experience of coordinating a shift.Significant post-qualification clinical experience as band 5.Skills/KnowledgeAbility to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives.Ability to administer prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood and blood products.Evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching and mentoring learners.An understanding of audit and research-based nursing practice.Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information, including dealing with distressed relatives and care of terminally ill patients & other challenging situations.Demonstrates ability to influence and negotiate with others. Ability to organize and plan own time and that of junior staff and learners.Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this affects their role and the department.Competent and capable of using medical equipment.Additional InformationEvidence of teamwork and ability to work effectively within a team.Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.Disclosure and Barring Service CheckThis post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
