Job summary Weare pleased to offer the opportunity for an enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow withwell-rounded training to join an existing team of 12 Consultants.
Main duties of the job The post holder will be expected to work alongside the 12Consultant Surgeons together with Specialist Registrars, Core Surgical Traineesand Foundation Trainees.
The department provides a wide range of in-patient andday case procedures and provides emergency and elective general surgeryservices as well as subspecialty services in Colorectal, Breast and Upper GI.The department has an excellent reputation for laparoscopic surgery andperforms significant numbers of laparoscopic colorectal resections, groin andventral hernia repairs and fundoplications each year.
The laparoscopic approachis routine for appendicectomy and cholecystectomy (both elective andemergency).
The breast unit perform over 250 cancer resections per year withboth immediate and delayed reconstructions.
Complex abdominal wallreconstructions are undertaken regularly for complex/giant incisional hernia.Acute Surgical UnitIn 2019 the Trust opened a new Acute Surgical Unit, with bespokeassessment facilities aimed at maximising our ambulatory care pathways forsurgical patients.
A senior surgical assessor reviews patients on presentationand integral ultrasound assessment speeds diagnosis.It has reduced non-elective admissions and reduced length ofstay.
Initially aimed at General Surgery patients, work is underway to broadenthe approach to other surgical specialities who could take advantage of thefacilities and ambulatory pathways.

The rota is compliant with thenew contract and is a 1 in 9 rota.
Post holders will be expected to co-operatein the introduction of new ways of working and monitoring processes with thesupport of the junior medical doctors.Patientsrequiring major vascular procedures are transferred to the Sheffield VascularInstitute, which also provides emergency vascular cover.The ST3+ andequivalents cover urology admissions out of hours and are expected to liaisewith the consultant urologist who is on call 24/7 if there are urologicalproblems.
There is a daily (including weekends) consultant-led urology wardround.Education and TrainingThesuccessful candidates will have access to all resources currently available inthe Trust.
This will involve Library andKnowledge Services, e-learning resources, Clinical Skills Training programmes,simulation training and other opportunities.Inductionwill be provided covering both generic and specialty specific requirements.
Fornew starters in the UK there will be a one-week programme in PGME prior tostarting clinical duties to prepare the post holder for practice in the UK.This may be extended according to individual needs.
Initial work in clinicalareas would be supernumerary until the Clinical Supervisor agrees the doctor isready to do on call.The postholders will be expected to develop a portfolio showing on-going professionaldevelopment and can access support from PGME to do this.
The post holders will have a namedEducational Supervisor; with whom they will meet on a regular basis forappraisal.
They will agree to a PersonalDevelopment Plan and receive assessment in the workplace and regular feedback,including multisource feedback.Eachclinical department will provide access to in-house teaching equivalent totraining grade doctors.
It is intended that a monthly teaching session fordoctors on this rotation will be established.Funding forexternal study leave may be available from the department equivalent in valueto career grade staff employed by the Trust.General1.

Person Specification Experience Essential Previous experience in General Surgery and a minimum of 2 years on a Basic Surgical Training Programme in posts approved for training required over and above that they could reasonably have gained via training to CCT level.
Desirable Subspecialty training or equivalent Research and Audit Essential Where appropriate ask for relevant research published in peer review journals.
