Job summary The screening phlebotomy service takes blood from pregnant women following their first ultrasound scan and from fathers of babies for genetic screening.
The successful applicant will also be responsible for ensuring results are available for all patients bled.

We work with pregnant women and their babies, meaning the schedule will be unpredictable and varied.
No two days are ever the same and each day brings a new experience.
Main duties of the job The main responsibility of the phlebotomist is to perform venepuncture for the collection of blood samples, with minimum trauma to patient whilst adhering to safe phlebotomy techniques and sample requirements.
As part of the screening tests the phlebotomist will be responsible for weighing the patient, and asking clinical questions regarding smoking, ethnicity, diabetes and IVF information which are required to complete the screening tests.
The screening support phlebotomist will also be responsible for sending out screening results and cross checking all patients tested have results available in a timely way.
It is essential to all aspects of the role that the post holder can organise efficiently, perform under pressure, work on their own initiative and as part of a team as well as under the guidance of supervision, following written standardised procedures.
You may also be responsible for answering queries from patients so good communication skills are essential.
Some patients may require the use of telephone interpreting services.

Perform phlebotomy services both for the Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening Programmes, routine tests ordered by clinicians &other ad-hoc requests.Assist the screening midwives in tracking patient results and monitoring screening fail-safes.

Perform phlebotomy services in the antenatal clinic setting.
This includes combined and quadruple tests and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for the fetal anomaly screening pathway, Father of the baby testing for sickle cell screening programmes and routine blood tests as ordered by clinicians.

Prepare the clinic for the following day by checking results for women prior to first ultrasound, identifying women who do not have booking bloods/ complete results.

Liaise with external laboratories providing the combined and quadruple tests if outstanding test results are found.

Assist the screening midwives with the antenatal and newborn (ANNB) screening failsafe on a daily/weekly basis as required, assisting in the collation and production of key performance indicators report.

Liaise with other departments and disciplines as required to ensure all tests are dispatched in a timely manner and results are available to patients and clinicians when required.

To maintain accurate records of all care provision in the clinical records.
