Job summary An Introduction to theDivision/Specialty An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated doctor, interestedin plastic surgery and burns, to join our Plastic Surgery Department from February2025 for a 6 month period.
During the course of the appointment,the post holders will be encouraged to develop clinical audit and researchprojects ultimately aiming for national and international presentations andpublications.
The post holders will be expectedto work on the 1:8 registrar on call rota.
Depending on the level ofexperience, we will endeavour to tailor the post to allow all necessarycompetences, to be achieved.
For more junior trainees we will help trainees to achieverequired competences for national selection at ST3 level.
More senior traineeswill be given the opportunity to develop their skills in their chosensub-specialties.ThePlastic surgery department, regional burns centre for adults and paediatricburns unit are situated on the Pinderfields site with outpatient and day-caseservices at Pontefract General Hospital and Dewsbury District Hospital.
We alsohave dedicated hand therapy services at all three hospital sites and plasticsurgery dressings clinic at Pinderfields Hospital.
Our adult burns, generalplastic surgery ward, hand therapy unit and plastic surgery dressings clinicare all co-located on the same floor.

The post willbe a combination of training, service delivery, research and educational inputwithin the specialty.
Although this post is not a recognised UKtraining post, MYDoc doctors will have a named supervisor and will be expected toundertake educational opportunities to consolidate and support careerprogression.
Thedepartment offers a supportive environment in which to develop academic andclinical interests.
An Introduction to the SpecialtyThe department of Burns and PlasticSurgery at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, provides a wide range of electiveand 24-hour emergency services to a population of approximately 500,000, drawnfrom Wakefield, Dewsbury, Pontefract and surrounding areas.The Plastic surgery department, regionalburns centre for adults and paediatric burns unit are situated on thePinderfields site with outpatient and day-case services at Pontefract GeneralHospital and Dewsbury District Hospital.
We also have dedicated hand therapyservices at all three hospital sites and plastic surgery dressings clinic atPinderfields Hospital.
Our adult burns, general plastic surgery ward, handtherapy unit and plastic surgery dressings clinic are all co-located on thesame floor.
Currently we have a team of 13 full-timeconsultants and 2 part-time consultants.
Our resident staff include: 3 FY2, 1CT, 6 trust grade CT, 4 NTN, 2 trust grade registrar and 2 trust grade researchregistrars and 1 breast fellow.
We also have a senior post FRCS hand fellow.
Wehave dedicated extended role hand therapists, breast and dermatology nursespecialists.Our particular spheres of interestinclude hand surgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, paediatric plasticsurgery, perineal reconstruction and acute and reconstructive surgery forburns.We treat all the elective and acute handpathology in Mid-Yorkshire, and probably have the largest hand fracturepractice of any Plastic Surgery unit in the country.
We have 10-11 dedicated consultantdelivered hand trauma lists a week.
We also have a day-time trauma consultantof the week who supports a full resident trauma on call team.
We have aseparate weekday, daytime burns on call team.
We have elective hand surgery lists in Dewsburyand Wakefield throughout the week and 1-3 complex hand clinics per week,providing an excellent opportunity for trainees to receive the highest qualityof clinic-based and operative hand surgery training.
We also have severalconsultant-led injection clinics and dressing clinics per week.
We hold a handsurgery MDT every six weeks which is attended by all therapy staff, handconsultants and trainees.We have 4 breast reconstructive surgeonswho work closely with the breast care team.
They provide a full range ofreconstructive options to our patients including DIEP flap reconstruction and implant-basedreconstructions with or without ADM - Latissimus Dorsi flap.
We currentlyperform 1-2 DIEP flaps a week.
We also provide a range of other breastprocedures including treatment for gynaecomastia, breast reduction, mastopexy, capsulotomies,nipple reconstruction and post burns breast reconstruction.
We have dedicatedbreast reconstruction lists and up to 4 consultant led breast clinics per week.We also provide an outpatient nipple tattoo service.
We actively participate ina weekly Breast MDT.We have 6 consultants with an interestin skin cancer.
They are part of the Skin MDT and undertake 6-10 operatinglists and 6-8 out-patient clinics a week.We also have 1 consultant who has aspecialist interest in perineal reconstruction.
He has published his modifiedtechnique of perineal reconstruction in JPRAS.Our burns service serves a population ofapproximately 5 million people across Yorkshire, Humber and North Lincolnshire.Our service is accessed by 19 emergency departments, in an area of around 3,000square miles.We treat over 180 adult and 200paediatric in-patients burns injuries every year.
In addition, we provideout-patient and outreach services to over 1000 patients annually.
We have ateam of burns specialist staff including surgeons, anaesthetists, microbiologists,dieticians, adult and paediatric psychologists, outreach sisters, play,occupational and physiotherapists.
Our MDT scar clinics take place atPinderfields Hospital, St Lukes Hospital in Bradford and Goole Hospital.
Weprovide face to face and telemedicine clinics for our patients.
We are now the only plastic surgerydepartment in the region to provide burns centre care for adults.
We are alsoresponsible for providing our regional NTN specialist registrars with therequired level of burns experience and training.We have 3 dedicated burns list per weekand have access to daily lists if and when necessary.
We have an LDI machineand are keen to develop is use as a research tool.
Members of our department, including doctorsand allied staff regularly present posters and oral presentations at BBA andISBI.
We hosted the BBA in 2023.
We havewon the best poster and oral presentation awards at BBA.
We are passionate about teaching andtraining.
We have a weekly departmental teaching programme consisting ofin-house presentations and invited external speakers.
We have Burns MDTmeetings every Monday and Friday mornings.
We provide core trainees from othertrusts the opportunity for clinical attachments with us, to give them exposureto burns care.
Our half day departmental CEPOD meetingstake place once a month.
Trainees are encouraged to present their audits andQIPs at these meetings.
We use these meetings to learn from each other anddiscuss clinical cases.
The Trust has established strong linkswith Leeds Medical School, therefore during term time we can have 2 to 4medical students attached to our department at any one time.
In addition, weregularly have sixth form students on work experience placements with us.We encourage all residents to teach,attend courses and undertake audit and research projects, with the goal ofpresenting and publishing their work both nationally and internationally.A number of our consultants areconveners and faculty members for local and national courses.
We regularlyundertake clinical and viva practice for FRCS (Plast) candidates and runsimulation workshops for our residents, such as suturing, skin grafting, tendonrepair and fracture fixation.
Weencourage our residents to actively participate and be involved in theorganisation of these courses.
This provides an excellent opportunity fortrainees to develop the teaching and training components of their portfolios.Our department is strongly invested intailoring training to individual needs, regardless of whether the individual isa specialist or MYDoc trainee or someone who wishes to top up their trainingin their senior years.
We are proud to have a researchcollaboration with the University of Bradford with a MPhil fellow whohasrecently been appointed as our new breast reconstruction consultant.
We havestrong links with Huddersfield University and have had several traineescomplete their Masters of Research degrees.
We hope to encourage more traineesto undertake a period of supervised research.
Our departmental ethos is to promotehigh quality, patient centred care in burns and plastic surgery througheducation, training and research in an environment that is supportive,inclusive, and forward thinking.The Service RoleThe post is equivalent in duties and responsibilitiesto a Specialty Registrar.From a clinical perspective these posts willparticipate in the senior trainee rota.The senior trainee rota is compliant with the 2016 junior doctorcontract averaging 48 hours per week.
On call arrangements are 1:8 with prospective coverfor annual and study leave.It is expected that the post holder will inconjunction with their assigned educational supervisor undertake a clinical audit/ research project.

Experience Essential Minimum experience equivalent to CT2/ST2 in Plastic Surgery (4 years full time post graduate training or part time equivalent) Minimum 12 months plastics surgery experience at CT level Proven experience in acute hospital setting Sound knowledge and experience in the management of critically ill patients At least 6 months recent experience in the NHS Evidence of an interest in Audit and Research Qualifications Essential Medical Degree from recognised medical school MRCS or recognised equivalent Successful completion of post registration training Desirable ATLS, ALS certification Medical School Prizes
