About the role: We have a great opportunity for an individual to join our General Counsel team here at Gowling as Head of Compliance with an opportunity to develop further.
Within this role you will be required to work with the General Counsel act as a key contributor and leader of the Compliance Team. As a team member in the wider General Counsel Leadership team, you will be working to ensure that the firm meets all of its legal, regulatory & professional obligations, including data protection compliance. As a Head of Compliance, you will also be responsible for managing the Compliance team.
About you: We are looking for someone who is a senior qualified lawyer, with significant experience either in private practice, industry or in post at a regulatory authority. Within this experience you will have either specialised in compliance and regulatory law (preferably as it relates to law firms). Data protection knowledge and expertise will be helpful but is not essential.
You will demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret complex law in a variety of areas, drawing on a working knowledge of legislation, regulation, and practice relevant to law firms (in particular the Proceeds of Crime Act, Solicitors Act, Data Protection Act, Money Laundering Regulations and international sanctions legislation). You will also need a working knowledge of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority's professional requirements and regimes including on behaviours and conflicts. An awareness of the possible implications/relevance of common law, contract and/or tort will also help.
In this role, you will leverage your confidence and experience to advise senior lawyers on challenging regulatory and compliance issues. You will also possess strong communication and influencing skills, enabling you to convey complex information confidently and persuasively to everyone from Executive Board members to support staff.
In managing the Compliance team, this role demands empathetic and motivational people skills, including workload coordination and fostering high performance. It requires a proactive approach and a business-oriented mindset to devise practical, compliant solutions that align with the firm's objectives within the regulatory framework, wherever feasible. The integration within a well-motivated and engaged team will be vital.
You will also possess strong IT skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, which enable the independent completion of tasks. An understanding of Data Analytics and a broad comprehension of business issues are essential to grasp the firm's objectives and the risks associated with those objectives.
