Equine Internal Medicine AssistantThe College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Equine Internal Medicine Assistant that will assist in diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions in horses.
As a Veterinary Assistant in our Equine Internal Medicine Service, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care to horses with a variety of internal medical conditions. You will work closely with our board-certified specialists and veterinary students to ensure that each patient receives the best possible treatment. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of equine medicine, working in a state-of-the-art facility.
This position is Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility is required as schedule may involve working beyond 5:00 p.m., some weekends, and/or holidays.
About the Service The Equine Internal Medicine service specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of horses with a variety of clinical conditions. The service provides diagnostic evaluations, hospitalization, and intensive care management of horses needing 24-hour therapy, diagnosis and treatment of emergency conditions, and routine preventative health care. The aim of the equine internal medicine service is to provide the horses with outstanding care and to provide their owners with compassionate, exceptional service. The equine internal medicine service utilizes a variety of state-of-the-art equipment for advanced diagnostics in equine patients.

Excellent full-time benefits that start on Day 1!Medical, dental, and vision insurance options for you and your family.Generous relocation allowance to make your move easier.Competitive state retirement program offering vesting after 10 years of service.How about these numbers? 4 weeks of vacation, 96 hours of sick leave, 6 weeks of paid parental leave for the birth or adoption of a child, and 9 official paid holidays.Overnight shift differentials = more $$$ in your pocket.Veterinary care and food discounts for your pets.Uniform and continuing education allowances.Rabies pre-exposure vaccination and titer costs covered by Auburn (for most positions).Tuition assistance for you and your dependents after a year of service.Opportunities for advancement.Essential Functions Patient Care: Assist with the examination, treatment, and monitoring of equine patients, including handling and restraining horses safely and effectively.Diagnostic Procedures: Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures such as sample collection, ultrasound, endoscopy, and radiography.Treatment Administration: Administer medications, IV fluids, vaccinations, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients' vital signs, responses to treatment, and overall progress, providing updates to veterinarians and adjusting care as needed.Client Communication: Communicate effectively with horse owners regarding their horses' conditions, treatment plans, and care instructions.Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including patient histories, treatment plans, and billing charges.Collaboration: Work collaboratively with veterinary students, interns, and other staff to provide comprehensive care and support for educational activities.Facility Maintenance: Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of medical equipment, treatment areas, and general hospital facilities.Minimum Qualifications Depending upon the combination of education and experience, the successful candidate will be hired as a Veterinary Assistant and assigned level II or III.
Level II: requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience working with equine patients in a professional veterinary setting.
Level III: requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience working with equine patients in a professional veterinary setting.
Substitutions allowed for Education: When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.
Substitutions allowed for Experience: When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Desired Qualifications Possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.The ability to drive a truck and/or tractor are strongly desired.Salary Range: $31,200 - $43,500
