Job summary This post is a new post which has been created to manage the increasing demand on the VR service.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing VR team to deliver a high quality and timely service to the local population.
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the service they will also work closely with the current team of consultant colleagues and participate in a 1 in 10 (both weekday and weekend) on call rota.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general ophthalmic and cataract service and flexibility is required to meet the department's service commitment to delivery of efficient, safe and high quality patient care.
The post holder must have sub-speciality training in VR.
Applicants will be required to have completed a substantial number of specialist VR procedures and will be expected to have an excellent clinical quality record and be able to demonstrate the ability to run the service efficiently as well as demonstrate competency in performing specialist procedures independently in theatre.
Applicants will also need to demonstrate commitment to excellent teamwork with clinical colleagues, willingness to utilise and develop clinical care pathways in the overall management of patients and assist in improving these pathways over time, and a very positive attitude to dealing with patients.
Main duties of the job The successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both specialist VR and general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients.
It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at two sessions in the operating theatre and three/four sessions a week in outpatient clinic in addition to administrative.
The successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both specialist VR, MR and general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients.
It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at two sessions in the operating theatre and three/four sessions a week in outpatient clinic in addition to administrative, management, clinical governance and supporting professional activity duties.
S/he will work closely with clinical colleague, nursing and other allied health care staff in order to enhance the level of patient care at the Trust.
The final allocation of patient contact time, including theatre and clinics will be agreed in discussion with the Clinical Director.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential FRCOphth (or equivalent) Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a) Certificate of completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview.
b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
European Community Rights Desirable Higher Degree Experience Essential Recognised sub-speciality training in vitreo-retinal surgery and /or Medical Retina
