We wish to appoint a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Paediatric care. This clinical post is primarily based at King's College Hospital's Denmark Hill site, though there is potential to support any of King's sites as appropriate. There may also be the requirement to support ROP screening at the University Hospital Lewisham to cover leave. The individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff (medical and non-medical) within the delivery of clinical sessions.
Main duties of the jobProvide specialist Consultant leadership, expertise and support to the paediatric ophthalmology services provided at King's College Hospital.Develop and provide comprehensive cover for this service, including community-based paediatric ophthalmology services, with involvement in training and supervision.Contribute to the strategic development of the paediatric ophthalmology service across all King's sites in collaboration with other specialists.Participate in regular meetings of a cross-site subspecialty paediatric ophthalmology group.Average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with remainder for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities.On-Call commitment is classed as Category B.Person specificationFRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalentOther higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD or PhD)RegistrationFull Registration with GMCName on GMC Ophthalmology Specialist Register on date of taking up appointmentTraining and ExperienceWide experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or award of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR) by GMCAdvanced subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismusCompetence in performing high volume and complex cataract surgeryAdministrationExperience in day-to-day organisation of ophthalmology services in a busy Teaching HospitalFamiliarity with information technology and general computer skillsFamiliar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changesManagement and LeadershipAble to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teamsManagement course and/or qualificationAudit and Quality ImprovementThorough understanding of principles of medical auditMust have undertaken and completed audit projectsAudit PublicationsResearch and PublicationsExperience of clinical researchPublication of relevant review articles or case reportsRelevant research experience in one or more aspects of ophthalmologyTeachingExperience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparationTeaching skills course/qualification
