Job overview: We wish to appoint a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Paediatric care. This clinical post is primarily based at King's College Hospital's Denmark Hill site, though there is potential to support any of King's sites as appropriate. The individual will play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff (medical and non-medical) within the delivery of clinical sessions.
Main duties of the jobProvide specialist Consultant leadership, expertise and support to the paediatric ophthalmology services at King's College Hospital.Develop and provide comprehensive cover for the paediatric ophthalmology service, including community-based services and training.Contribute to the strategic development of the paediatric ophthalmology service across all King's sites.Participate in regular meetings of a cross-site subspecialty paediatric ophthalmology group.Fulfill an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder for Supporting Professional Activities.Participate in on-call commitments classified as Category B.Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesProvide high quality care service to patients, including management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.Share responsibility for providing 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis.Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners.Conduct teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required.Manage outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed.Contribute to the Care Group's research interests and audit programmes.Engage in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group's Business Plan.Exercise professional leadership for all staff in the specialty.Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control policies.Participate in the development of 7-day services.Person specificationFRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalentOther higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD or PhD)RegistrationFull Registration with GMCName on GMC Ophthalmology Specialist Register on date of taking up appointmentTraining and ExperienceWide experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology.Advanced subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.Competence in performing high volume and complex cataract surgery.AdministrationExperience in day-to-day organisation of ophthalmology services in a busy Teaching Hospital.Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.Understanding of the current structure of the UK National Health Service.Management and LeadershipDemonstrated leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.Management course and/or qualification.Audit and Quality ImprovementUnderstanding of principles of medical audit.Experience with audit projects.Audit Publications.Research and PublicationsExperience of clinical research.Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.Relevant research experience in ophthalmology.TeachingExperience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.Teaching skills course/qualification.IMPORTANT Check your email account regularly as this is how we will communicate with you.If you delete the job from any of your accounts, you may be prevented from accessing further communications.To enquire about your application or inform us of any changes in your circumstances, please contact the named person on this advert.Please provide email addresses for referees where possible.All staff have a responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.Due to a high volume of applications, this advert might close before the displayed closing date.
