Main Duties/Responsibilities of the Job Senior responsibility for clinical caseload, including delivery of general, emergency and specialist clinics, as well as day case activity and on call – during the day and out of hours.
Effectively communicate both clinical and non-clinical matters to all levels of supporting staff, as well as patients.
Contribute to the ongoing development of Ophthalmic services, across the Department.
Ensure delivery of high quality patient care across the wider team, empowering and assisting others to deliver optimum services.
Play an active part in the supervision, training and development of the Ophthalmology team, including provision of placement support for medical students.
Participate effectively in departmental audit.
Engage with requirements for Continuing Professional Development in accordance with guidelines set down by the Royal College.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential FRCOphth or MRCS or FRCS.
Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise.
Desirable Completion of a fellowship or other qualification in an ophthalmic sub-specialty or special interest.
ExperienceEssential Clinical training and experience in Ophthalmology broadly equivalent to that required to gain UK CCST in Ophthalmology.
Able to work independently at a senior level, taking responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Consultant experience in a Healthcare system, working independently for a minimum of two years.
Experience of senior/consultant level on call in an acute general hospital Ophthalmology Department sufficient to safely function upon the Consultant on call rota.
Desirable Management experience or attendance at courses for SpRs/Consultant level practitioners.
SkillsEssential Ability to take part and at times, lead a clinical team.
Clinical supervision experience/skills.
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
Desirable Ability to undertake training/mentoring of clinical staff and enthusiasm for education.
