Job summary Gloucestershire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a Neurology Centre that provides comprehensive neurological care for patients in Gloucestershire.The service consists of Consultants who work alongside a team of neurology specialist nurses.
The team manage conditions from across the County which provides a vast amount of variety and opportunities for development in order to support the patients of Gloucestershire.The team manage a small ward of inpatients and have a large outpatient service within Gloucester and Cheltenham hospital.
The consultant will have the opportunity to develop a sub-specialty of choice and support the development of the service.
Main duties of the job The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Neurology DepartmentTo examine and treat patients and supervise patient care on theTo see patients referred to neurology from other teams within the hospitalTo see patients in the out-patient clinicsTo support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staffTo provide on call support out of To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols.
To remain contactable and available when on callTo carry out ward roundsTo manage internal ward referralsTo provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations including undertaking work-based assessments.To participate in the undergraduate teaching programmeThe post holder will be encouraged to be active in clinical About us The Trust received approval to become a Foundation Trust in July 2004 to provide acute hospital services for the whole of Gloucestershire.
The Trusts five-year plan which is called 'Our Journey to Outstanding' aims to achieve the Trusts vision of 'Best Care for Everyone'.Over the course of a year the average activity for the Trust is more than 17,000 elective inpatient cases, 62,000 emergency inpatient cases, 74,000 day cases, almost 800,000 outpatients attendances and 125,000 A&E attendances.
The Trust serves a population of almost 620,000 for acute care and a population of over 750,000 for cancer.Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides general hospital services predominantly to people living in the west of the county and will be the centre for the majority of emergency care pathways.
Some services such as renal and haemodialysis, inpatient paediatrics, paediatric oncology, inpatient neurology, rheumatology, dermatology and ENT are provided for the whole county.Cheltenham General Hospital provides general hospital services predominantly to people living in the east of the county and parts of south Worcestershire.
The Oncology Centre is located at Cheltenham General Hospital and provides cancer treatment for Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.
Job description Job responsibilities Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:- To ensure the provision of a first class clinical serviceTo provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialtyTo sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriateTo undertake all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policiesTo conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts and Divisions services plansTo maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Trust Person Specification Qualifications Essential Full GMC registration MBBS or equivalent Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via oCCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) oCESR Desirable MD or PhD, Additional degrees, diplomas or postgraduate thesis relevant to the specialty Clinical experience Essential Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Neurology Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients Desirable Subspecialty expertise that complements those within the department Background experience in general medicine (MRCP) Motivation and Attitude Essential Highly motivated Forward thinking Personal Skills Essential Communication skills, written and verbal Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team Ability to show initiative and enthusiasm Ability to work under stress Flexibility, able to adapt to changing circumstances Honesty and reliability Enquiring, critical approach to work Caring attitude to patients Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GP's, nurses and other agencies Desirable Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels Research and publications Essential Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects Desirable Publications in peer- reviewed journals Information Technology Essential Basic IT skills.
