Job summary THIS POST IS FIXED TERM FOR 22 MONTHS DUE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE Do you want to use your public health skills to influence the causes of the causes of ill-health?
The Wider Determinants of Health Unit of Public Health Wales is seeking an enthusiastic Public Health Consultant to work with us for two days a week until September 2026, to lead a programme of work supporting multi-sector action on wider determinants, including poverty to improve health.
As the successful candidate, you will have a successful track record of working with multiple agencies and disciplines at a senior level to achieve public health goals.
You will have a good knowledge of current policy and developments in Wales, including the application of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015.
You will have experience of facilitation of change and of collaboration across organisational boundaries.
You will be able to demonstrate highly developed influencing, negotiation and motivation skills to drive action through partnerships.
You will provide specialist input to the Building a Healthier Wales Coordination Group, which brings together senior leaders from across Wales to maximise the impact of collective efforts of agencies in Wales to improve health, well-being and equity.
Main duties of the job Provide public health strategic leadership, informing, advocating for, and mobilising collaborative action on determinants of health, through the Building a Healthier Wales partnership Develop effective relationships with members, Welsh Government colleagues, local public health teams, local government, and others in Public Health Wales, Contribute to Public Health Wales's long term strategy priority: influencing the wider determinants of health Have a high degree of political awareness, working to influence policy and practice locally and nationally.

The post-holder must be on the GMC/GDC Specialist Register/UK Voluntary Register / included on the UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists.
Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists and be licensed to practice Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements ( be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body Personal Qualities Essential Personal credibility in senior managerial and political settings Able to prioritise work, and work well against a background of change and uncertainty Adaptable to situations, can build powerful relationships with people of all capabilities and attitudes Experience Essential Practical experience in facilitating change in the public health system Significant strategic experience of leadership for public health Experience of systems leadership and demonstrable experience of delivering effectively through others Experience of effectively engaging staff and colleagues to gain their support for changes to the direction of travel.
Experience in influencing relevant agencies in Wales and/or beyond on health and/or health determinants agenda.
Project management Significant experience of public health practice at senior level with a demonstrable interest in health improvement Staff management including learning and development Desirable Scientific publications, presentation of papers at conferences, seminars Skills Essential Strategic thinker with proven leadership skills Ability to effectively influence and collaborate with colleagues and partners Computer literate Knowledge Essential Detailed knowledge of NHS Policy and other related sectors Knowledge and understanding of large-scale change to the public health system.
Understanding of social and political environment in Wales Desirable Understanding of approaches and methods relating to behaviour change science and to systems thinking
