Job summary We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and ambitious colleague to work within our exciting, ever-expanding Paediatric Department, and specifically into our local Paediatric Nephrology Service.
The substantive post has become available due to increased workload within the specialty, which up till now has been led by a single special interest (SPIN) consultant.
Increased capacity to deliver and improve quality specialist care closer to children's homes, means a fantastic opportunity awaits anyone with an interest and training in paediatric nephrology.
The post holder will support paediatric nephrology work and some general paediatric emergency and elective work too, including outpatient clinics.
Successful applicants will have a job plan that includes general Paediatric service weeks, on calls out of hours and during weekends in addition to outpatient clinics.
We have separate general paediatric and neonatal rotas across all three tiers and you are not expected to contribute towards the Neonatal on call rota.
This post comes with core SPA time, which is equivalent to those of other Consultants within the Department.
You will be encouraged to take on a leadership role in education/risk/service development should you wish to do so, usually by increasing the proportion of SPAs.

Main duties of the job The post holder will provide acute and outpatient services in Paediatrics and Nephrology.
They will also participate in the general paediatric rota.
They will also provide appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.
He/she will be expected to work closely with primary and tertiary care to provide a seamless service.
As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

Job description Job responsibilities To provide expertise in Nephrology and general paediatrics, safeguarding and any other chosen subspecialty interest.
To share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to patients presenting to the Paediatric unit To support the clinical decision making of junior medical doctors, nursing staff and specialist nurses To provide on-call support for Paediatrics and to attend the Department out-of-hours as per agreed protocols; to remain contactable and available when on-call To provide for as long as it is required, an outpatient service at a peripheral hospital in the county To provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations and GMC Trainee Survey Feedback To take a full role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including clinical meetings and tutorials.
Undergraduate medical student teaching is organised through the Gloucestershire Clinical Academy, part of the University of Bristol Where agreed, to act as Clinical or Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning To support learning and development of Physicians Assistants and other allied professionals including Paramedics when in the Department The Trust subscribes to a wide range of journals and there are good medical libraries at both Gloucester and Cheltenham with full literature search facilities.
The department is part of a Trust wide intranet system and is well served for literature search and other internet functions To keep Good Clinical Practice training up to date for as long as participating in clinical research Person Specification Qualifications & Training Essential Full GMC registration MBBS or equivalent Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview) At least 6 months or more training at a (level 3) paediatric Nephrology centre Nephrology SPIN training/curriculum completed in training (only applicable to recent CCT) 6 months working at Tier 2 level in PICU Up to date APLS and Level 3 child safeguarding training (multiagency) Desirable Additional relevant degrees, diplomas or postgraduate thesis APLS/EPALS/NLS instructor Additional management qualification Teaching qualification Educational supervision training Personal membership of a 'medical defence' organisation.
Evidence of Subspeciality (Nephrology) qualifications and expertise (UK or European) Bladder incontinence training in children Knowledge & Clinical Skills Essential Consistent with independent consultant practice in a Paediatric unit.
Competent to manage children and babies in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision , able to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems in both elective and emergency settings Motivation & Attitude Essential Evidence of self-motivation and initiative.
Commitment to the paediatric service development Be an example as clinical leader Ability to organise own CME/CPD needs.
Research Experience Essential Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical problems Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects
