Job Role - Care Assistant Main aims of the job To be part of the residential care team, whose aims are to ensure that resident's personal and psychological needs are met on a daily basis.
To help promote as much personal and physical independence and choice as possible in the activities of daily living undertaken by the residents within the residential home.
To help maintain a stimulating and attractive environment for the residents.
Key Responsibilities To assist in the direct care provision of all aspects of the resident's assessed needs, which may include; To assist residents in washing, dressing, and undressing.
To participate in the basic residential care of the residents e.g., bed bathing, pressure area, mouth care, and eye care.
To assist the residents with their toileting needs, including continence promotion.
To change beds, tidy residents' rooms and do cleaning.
To empty aids, where appropriate.
To assist with problems with mobility, including those of mobility aids, where appropriate.
To help in the serving of meals and drinks, feeding those residents who are unable to feed themselves and ensuring that each resident receives the meal or diet that he/she has requested and is suitable for his/her needs.
To help with the admission and discharge of residents, including listing of resident's property/clothing.
To convey relevant information about the resident to the registered manager (or most senior person in their absence), in order that the individual plan of care may be regularly updated, and appropriate care given, paying particular attention to any changes observed in the resident's physical or psychological condition.
Assist in weighing of residents.
Report immediately to the registered manager (or most senior person in charge in their absence), any accident or untoward incident, which may occur to a resident or a member of staff.
Maintain confidentiality regarding resident's particulars.
Assist in activities within the residential care home.
To help to maintain a safe environment for staff, residents, and visitors, through awareness of health and safety policies and by attending training as required.
To attend appropriate, required, and mandatory training programmes/courses as available, which will further existing knowledge.
Answer the telephone, take clear messages, and contact the person in charge immediately.
To undertake any other duties as required, in order to keep the care home running smoothly, as delegated by registered manager.
General To attend and participate in staff meetings and attend all mandatory training when required To attend supervision and appraisals ensuring that you have prepared for these when required To attend any other training when a need has been identified To assist with domestic duties in the home including cooking cleaning and laundry when the need arises To communicate effectively with other staff, relatives and visitors including professional agencies regarding residents To be fully aware of the fire policy, and the awareness of food hygiene regulations To be familiar with all current policies and procedures and understand your duty to comply and implement them when necessary To always wear uniform provided with plain black trousers and flat sensible shoes at all times Ensure that you do not use a mobile telephone while on duty To ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties To keep all records of domestic work completed after each shift in the appropriate book Understand your duty to whistle blow if you witness bad practice or harm to a resident within the Home To promote and ensure the good reputation of the home at all times Health and Safety To ensure that you work in a safe environment in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act To assist in the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment by understanding and ensuring adherence to the Homes' Health and Safety Policy and Procedures including Fire To practice and promote safe working practices within the care home To take responsibility for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions To be fully aware and comply with infection control policies and procedures and appropriate hand hygiene technique To report immediately to the manager in charge, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a resident, colleague, self or another To report to the manager in charge of any faults, damaged furniture, faulty appliances, equipment, or any potential hazard The residential care home has adopted a NO SMOKING policy which applies to all posts within the care home.
Smoking may be carried out in a designated area.
Qualifications, Training and Experience Must have at least 3 years experience working in a care setting To have a genuine interest for older people Care Certificate or Level 2 or 3 NVQ or the capacity to complete either qualification.
To have good communication skills To have the ability to work effectively within a team environment Administration To have a working knowledge of policies and procedures and ensure these are put into practise.
To ensure that all administrative records and documentation as required are completed legibly and on time.
To follow all local protocols within the service setting.
