Job overview Specialist Biomedical Scientist AfC Band 5/6 The Histology department is seeking to recruit a part- time competent, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual, with substantive experience in Cellular Pathology to provide technical support to our professional and friendly Histopathology team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
The department may consider band 5 staff undertaking their IBMS Specialist portfolio in Cellular Pathology that show potential, under Annex 21 (70% of band 6).
They would be required to complete the Specialist Portfolio, with external verification.
This is expected to be completed within 12 months from the commencement of employment.
If successful, this would lead to a permanent Band 6 Biomedical Scientist position.
Failure to achieve successful verification of the HCPC Registration portfolio after this time period will result in the termination of this contract with appropriate notice.The successful candidate will participate in the rotation through the different laboratory areas; including the main laboratory, specimen dissection, special staining and immunohistochemistry.

The department's commitment to supporting Continuing Professional Development is evidenced by an excellent training record.The post will be based at QEH, however there's an expectation for staff to work cross site if or when required.
Working for our organisation The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa.
822 WTE.

Person specification Experience Essential criteria Post registration experience in a Histopathology Laboratory.Experience of supervising and working in a team.Experience of working in NHS environment, under UKAS: ISO 15189 standards.Experience of working to deadlines.
Desirable criteria Experience of immunocytochemistry (IHC) Skills Essential criteria Extensive computer skills.Able to follow Standard Operating Procedures.Able to undertake specialist histopathology laboratory techniques.Excellent numerical and literacy skills.
Knowledge Essential criteria Good knowledge of histopathology theory and practice.Use of initiative in prioritising and seeing where assistance is needed and providing that assistance.Able to help investigate, troubleshoot and correct staining issues.Good interpersonal skills, able to build and develop working relationships with colleagues within and outside the Trust.Working knowledge of data security and confidentiality.IT Literate including use of Microsoft word, data analysis and use of Laboratory Information Management System.Health & Safety legislation.Knowledge of quality assurance.In-dept understanding of the processes and practices within histopathology.
