Job summary Applications are invited from motivated, enthusiastic andimprovement focussed HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists to join the Haematology& Blood Transfusion Department at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.We are UKAS accredited and an IBMS approved training laboratory.Applications are being sought from experienced HCPCregistered Biomedical Scientists who have successfully completed the IBMSSpecialist Diploma in Haematology with Transfusion Practice.
Applications arealso invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who are working towardscompletion of their IBMS Specialist Portfolio - (Band 6status will be granted on attainment of the Specialist Diploma).The post holder would be working hours per week as partof the 24/7 roster.The successful candidate will work within the HaematologyTeam across two hospital sites providing support to Senior Biomedical Scientistsin quality management of the Haematology Section.For further information, please contact Bev Byfield-Jones, Haematology Manager via email: .
Main duties of the job To support Biomedical Scientists and MLA staff within theHaematology Section on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital siteTo support the Section Lead/Senior BMS in quality managementof the Haematology Section within the resources available.
To assist with thetraining of less experienced staff in the Haematology SectionTo monitor Quality & Performance within the HaematologySectionTo work and maintain competence in all other sections of the laboratory as part of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion two site roster coverThe post holder will beexpected to hold (or nearing completion of)) the IBMS Specialist Diploma inHaematology with Transfusion Practice.
The role includes some weekend,bank holiday and night duties on a rotational basis.

Job description Job responsibilities 1.
Key Duties:Managementof the Quality System in the Haematology Section of the department on the WRHsiteAssist with training of staff in the Haematology Section Ensure adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available withappropriate recording of reagent lot numbers for audit and verification Monitor IQC and EQA performance andinvestigate and resolve any problems in conjunction with the Section Lead BMS Attend Laboratory meetings and presentQuality and Performance updates for the Haematology Section in the absence ofthe Section Lead BMS.
Assist the Section Lead with theproduction of SOPs, Documents and maintenance logs, ensuring they are kept upto date.
Maintain all documentation required forUKAS ISO15189 accreditation.
Assist the Section Lead to ensure all matters relating to UKAS ISO15189compliance are addressedAssist with the maintenance of all equipment in the Haematology Section andliaise with suppliers over problems.
Call out service engineers whenappropriate.Assist with the implementation and development of new techniques within theHaematology Section of the Department to include taking a lead role inVerification and all documentation required to demonstrate compliance withISO15189 standard prior to implementation.Liaise with Company Representatives under the direction of the Section Lead BMS Take telephone enquiries from Doctors, Nurses, other Ward staff, GP surgeries,staff from other Hospitals, and any other outside sources.
Give results andadvice, if appropriate or transfer or seek advice.
Review test results from analysers and authorise if appropriate or pass forfurther tests or review by Consultant Haematologists.Assist with sample referral to external laboratories and the inputting ofreport data received backBe able to perform routine investigations in Haematology and Blood Transfusionand be prepared to undertake duties in all sections of the Department asrequired.Be able to perform microscopic examination of stained blood films, reporting offindings, and then authorising results or passing to Consultant Haematologists.
Input Patient ID and test request data onto Laboratory IT system.Liaise with departmental IT Specialist BMS on day to day issues relating toWinPath BHI to ensure functionality as described in SOPs.Participate in the departmental 24-7 shift rota.
Thisinvolves the following: Tobe able to work alone without supervision.
Tobe able to take control in any Health and Safety event that may take place outof hours.
Tobe able to authorise results as they are available to enable them to bereported electronically to wards and departments.
Tobe able to give advice to Doctors and ward staff if needed.
Tomonitor the quality of the service offered at all times.
Abilityto respond to the Trust Major Incident Policy.2.
Education & Training Assist with the supervision of training andmonitor the performance of BMS and MLA staff working in the HaematologySection.
Liaise with the Departmental Training Officer onall matters related to Training within this section Attend NEQAS meetings and seminars in specialistarea to keep up to date with current trends and developments as required tomaintain knowledge of Quality related issues Attend training courses for new equipmentintroduced into the Haematology Section as required to maintain knowledge ofQuality related issues.3.
Management Attend meetings, in the absence of the SectionLead BMS where matters of Quality within Haematology are to be discussed Participate in the induction of new staff.
Sit on recruitment panels for less experiencedstaff, as required Perform any other duties deemed reasonable andnecessary by the Head BMS.
Provide cover for the Specialist BMS in othersections in their absence.
Participate and comment on Departmental policyand planning.
In the absence of the Section Lead BMS attendSenior, Laboratory and Quality Management meetings and contribute to theQuality Management Review, providing data on Quality Indicators asrequired Attend regular meetings with the Section LeadBMS as a key member of the team, to keep abreast of relevant issues Conduct annual Performance and DevelopmentReviews with Band 5 BMS and MLA staff, if required4.ProfessionalMaintain a professional attitude at all times.Be aware of personal and professional development.
Attend courses andconferences as recommended and approved.Participate in own annual Performance and Development Review.Comply with Trust policies.5.Manual HandlingThe job may entail lifting moderately heavy reagent containers.QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCERegistrationas a Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council.
IBMSSpecialist Diploma in Haematology & Blood Transfusion or equivalentknowledge & experience Experience in all aspects of Haematology and BloodTransfusion tests and related matters as a Band 5 BMSTRAININGTrainingwill be given to enable the above duties to be carried out efficiently.Participationin the IBMS CPD scheme is encouraged Allmandatory training specific to the Department and Trust will be provided andmust be kept up to date.
Post-graduate training will be supported as necessaryto enable compliance with the qualifications required for this post.
In somecases this may not be funded by the Trust.
Person Specification Qualifications Essential HCPC Registration as Biomedical Scientist Attainment of Specialist Diploma in Haematology and Transfusion Science or at least 50% completion of portfolio (or equivalent knowledge & experience) Desirable Quality Related Qualification Experience Essential Post Registration experience of all routine analysis in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
Experience of audits and non-conformance reporting Desirable Experience of UKAS Accreditation Audits and preparation Personal Qualities Essential Able to work as part of a team Confident to work unsupervised Able to provide a degree of flexibility with work patterns Attention to detail Able to work with conflicting and competing demands Must be willing to participate in shift work after a period of orientation and demonstration of proficiency in all routine procedures.
Ability to comply with Trust Departmental Policies and Procedures Must be willing to work across two hospital sites Knowledge and Skills Essential Good knowledge of ISO 15189;2022 Accreditation Standard On-going CPD and specialist training and experience equivalent to post-graduate IBMS Specialist Diploma level Must be prepared to attend training courses appropriate to post.
Must be able to supervise Band 5 BMS staff on a day-to-day basis.
Able to demonstrate good communication skills Good organizational skills
