Job description Job responsibilities Job Plan:As a guide theworking time for the advanced dissection postholders will be apportioned asfollows:80% dissection,encompassing A-E grade specimens (as appropriate and only where training andcompetency has been completed or consultant supervision is in place)20% routine advancedBMS duties including acting as the designated person responsible for managingand co-ordinating activities within the cut-up or routine section of thehistopathology laboratory.

Responsible for the maintenance, condition, QC andrecord keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the section To contribute towards a culture of quality in thedepartment and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within thedepartment consistent with the requirements of accrediting and regulatorybodiesHistology specimendissectionParticipate in the surgicaldissection of diagnostic A-E graded histopathology specimens (range will bedependent on experience, knowledge but also consultants discretion) which willencompass the following:Evaluateclinical information on histopathology request forms and understand specimenidiosyncrasies.
Accuratelymacroscopically examine, describe and photograph specimens where necessary.
Dissectand select relevant material for histological processing.
Selectappropriate preparatory procedures to aid diagnostic interpretation decalcification etc.
Providea provisional diagnostic macroscopic report dictation.
Beable to recall complex specimens with clarity, or have supporting evidence ofdissection in way of drawings or pictures.
The post holder should also: Beaware of knowledge and self limitations, and have a low threshold for seekingadvice Keepadequate records of specimens dissected, including error logs and topicalreflective practices Mentoror teach lower grade staff via tutorials, slide sessions and lectures Gainand maintain macroscopic and microscopic knowledge of specimens and bodysystems via lectures attended and via self-teaching.
Willbe expected to work towards attaining formal IBMS qualifications inHistological Dissection if they do not possess them on appointment.
Toact as the designated person responsible for managing and co-ordinatingactivities within the cut-up section and routine Histopathology Laboratory(this role may be shared with other Advanced BMS posts).
Inconjunction with the Clinical Lead, Discipline Manager and Quality Manager toimprove quality standards in the work performed in the histological cut-uparea.
Toparticipate in audits within the Division to monitor the effectiveness thequality management system.

Maintain,update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills, at firstunder supervision, using the Trusts Performance Review System, enablingstandards of patient care to be monitored constantly and improved.
Record,report and investigate incidents/complaints in accordance with Trust policies.
Toidentify and carry out appropriate corrective action where required in responseto non-conformities Tomeasure and monitor the accuracy and precision of the laboratory investigationsusing appropriate QC procedures.
Liaisewith senior staff regarding KPIs/results/performance and identify areas forimprovement in the laboratory.4.
Responsibility- Financial and Physical Resources Responsible for managing consumable and reagentstock supplies associated with the section.Assist in theimplementation, development and evaluation of new and existing techniques.Responsible for themaintenance and calibration of equipment when working autonomously.5.
Responsibility Staff/ HR/ Leadership,& Training Maintain,update and develop personal and professional knowledge and skills byparticipating in the Trusts 1:1process and PDP development.
Befamiliar with and follow all core trust policies such as sickness reporting,annual leave requesting, health and safety.
Be familiar with the Health and Safetypolicies of the Trust and the department and ensure that they are followed tomaintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.

The supervision of all grades of scientific, medical andsupport staff in the dissection section.In conjunction with linemanagers, assist in the training of staff and undertake periodic competencyassessments of staff.
Undertakeand/or contribute to the appraisal of more junior members of staff using theTrusts 1:1 process and PDP development.
Responsiblefor the conduct of the staff being supervised in respectto their timekeeping, behaviour and safety.Report any problems to the line manager.6.
